Opposite of love is not hate, it is indifference

There is a very important saying by Sigmund Freud: The first person who hurled an insult as against a stone was the creator of civilization.

A world of truth hides in a statement as plain as the one above. It was in the pre-historic times that scores were settled with the use of sticks and stones before men graduated on to sickles and swords, settling for guns and cannons a couple of centuries back. But the civilized world in which we find ourselves today, a majority of the population has spent its life without having even one close look at any kind of arms and ammunition. Obviously, we have transitioned in the human race where the only thing available to a person’s rescue is his tongue that accompanies his mind.

Are we as prepared to defend ourselves with a judicious use of words  in a host of situations and circumstances? This is one question, the answer of which you can ask anyone other than yourself also if you don’t mind an incorrect answer. However, the truth of the matter is ‘the opposite of love is not hate, it is indifference’ and that is precisely the emotion that we show towards the communications aspect of our personal development. The ability to articulate and to hit the nail hard are not two disconnected activities.

Imagine yourself in a social setting, be it a party at the Bar socializing with all the folks you haven’t seen in a while or a family gathering where all relatives collect to discuss the acquisition of their new toys since they met last, what are they invariably trying to do? Use their words as a shield or sword, sometimes one at a time and at other times, simultaneously. The loser is almost always the person who reaches his wits end early.
