Three Industrialists

Three seasoned industrialists, long-time friends, were enjoying coffee in a hotel lobby. Their cordial conversation masked a competitive edge, each silently hoping for bad news about the others’ businesses. Despite their outward friendliness, the real conversation was a game of one-upmanship.

Industrialist 1 boasted, “Last year was tough, but we managed a 16% growth, with revenue hitting $1.5 billion—that’s billion with a B.”

Industrialist 2 countered, “Revenue is one thing, but we focus on the bottom line. We had a net profit of $245 million, up 34% from last year.”

Industrialist 3 chimed in, “We prioritize corporate social responsibility. Even in tough times, we haven’t laid off any staff. In fact, I’ve recruited employees from your companies, knowing they would thrive with us.”

A university professor, a mutual friend, overheard their exchange and interjected, “You’re all in your early 60s. You have about 15,000 days left. Why are you squabbling like teenagers?”

Industrialist 2 replied, “We boast because we have something to boast about.”

The others laughed, and after the laughter subsided, Industrialist 1 asked, “So, what should we do with our remaining time?”

The professor advised, “Consider your legacy. Aim to leave something profound—a quote or wisdom that future generations will remember. Focus on making a lasting impact, rather than just competing.”
